Max Estes (f. 1977) er amerikaner, illustratør og forfatter bosatt i Norge og med norsk statsborgerskap. Han har utgitt en rekke tegneserieromaner og bildebøker, og har vunnet flere priser for arbeidet sitt. Hans grafiske flate- og linjestil er påvirket av tegneserier, populærkultur og retrodesign. Historiene blir i stor grad fortalt gjennom illustrasjonene og har ofte få ord. Seriene og bøkene hans er utgitt i en rekke land.

Max Estes aktuell med ny bildebok
Nå er Max Estes aktuell med boken Sykkelløpet. På en finurlig måte klarer Max Estes å lære oss om racersykling og samtidig fortelle en enkel og spennende historie for de yngste. Leseren bringes inn i et spennende ritt, der sykkellag mot sykkellag skal klatre opp på snødekte fjell og rase nedover fjellsider. De sykler gjennom skog og by i mer og mindre samlet flokk, men til slutt er det bare en som kan vinne…
– Er det en eller flere bøker fra «barndommens nattbord», som har gjort spesielt sterkt inntrykk på deg?
– I’ve forgotten the names of many fabulous picture books from my childhood, though I can still recall the illustrations. I guess that’s no surprise, as I’ve always considered myself an illustrator first and an author second. For me, the illustrations always hold center stage, images are immediate. Though one author I clearly remember is Richard Scarry. I especially loved his Busytown books, following his colorful casts of anthropomorphized animals. Each page of a Richard Scarry book is a visual feast, stocked with colorful cars, towering buildings, wonderfully busy streets. As a youngster, I would read those books until they literally fell apart in my hands.
Another title I loved was Leave Horatio Alone, by Eleanor Lowenton Clymer. Clymer’s Horatio series introduced readers to a fabulously crabby orange cat years before Garfield was introduced to the world. I loved this delightfully sour cat, and Robert Quakenbush’s angular illustrations really made these stories come alive.
– Hva har litterære møter i barndommen betydd for din senere skapende virksomhet?
– I was lucky in that both my mother and my step-dad were authors in their own right. As such, reading was naturally a big deal in my house. My mom and I would take weekly pilgrimages to our local library, both equally enthralled at the offerings. She would return to the front desk with a pile of novels, I with a pile of colorful picture books. Those trips to the library were akin to visiting a candy store, I’ve always been drawn to books, whatever the subject.
